Tailored Workshops

  • Do you struggle to communicate with non-native speakers of English, or try to avoid communicating with them altogether because you're not sure how to?
  • Are you worried you may cause offence by saying or doing the wrong thing to someone from a different culture?
  • Do you lose patience when someone doesn’t understand you (or you them) due to their limited English?
  • Would you like to know how to simplify your language so you could communicate more clearly and more effectively with those who speak English as a second language?

CASE STUDY Trainee Primary Education teachers at University of Winchester

My workshop will:

  • give you the tools to communicate positively, inclusively and effectively even when there is no language or culture in common. Through interactive activities and real-life case studies, you will gain the understanding and confidence to interact with people whose first culture and first language are different from yours;
  • help you analyse and understand your own use of language (both verbal and non-verbal) to develop a high level of self-awareness. This self-analysis will allow you to adapt the way you communicate, to help prevent misunderstandings and avoid unintentionally causing offence;
  • exemplify the connection between culture and language and in so doing, increase your ability to empathise. This will help you develop an appreciation of how our culture affects the way we behave and communicate, and this understanding will help increase your tolerance towards other cultures and social norms.
Daphna Skotnicki presenting a tailored workshop to trainee teachers on the BA Primary Education course
For several years now I have been invited to the University of Winchester as a guest lecturer, because of my professional background and MA research, to deliver a workshop to final-year trainee teachers on the BA Primary Education course. The aim of my talk is to share ideas on how best to adjust the curriculum for pupils who use English as an Additional Language and build partnerships with those pupils and their families. It is always such a pleasure to share my passion for this topic with other teachers. Since mine is an interactive workshop rather than a lecture, participants get to experience some of the challenges their future EAL (English as an Additional Language) pupils may face. Common comments are: “thought provoking”, “eye-opening” and the need to “re-evaluate how I word things”!
